Buses in Japan are always on time. If not early. You get on at the back, and do not buy a ticket. You sit down
Wait until the voice above your head tells you it's your stop, and press the button. the scary voice will thank you. Move to the front. There is a machine there. If you do not have the ¥220 it costs in change, then stick a ¥1000 note into the change machine. dude upwards, and it will spit coins back at you. You then place ¥220 in the slot on the top, and the driver will no doubt growl something at you.
I have a pass, so I only have to pay for one half of my journey. Dammit Japan is strange!
