Are you fed up with certain people on your livejournal friends-of list?

Do you wish that you could log in and remove yourself from their lists?

How about I tell you how to reach a comprimise.

Say you've got person A, who has added you to your journal, and you can't stand them. In fact, even the sight of their name, unbolded, every time you log into livejournal annoys you to the point of distraction.

Maybe your journal is friends only, and there's no point in them even having you there, and it's just one more annoying red arrow in Semagic.

Fear not.

Go to [The Console] [after making sure you are logged in, of course] and type in

ban_set :user:

but replace :user: with their username. eg.
ban_set mofette

that would ban me from commenting in your journal.

Yes, I know that's not exactly what I said, but it also has the added *new* side-effect of removing them from your friends-of list! Unfortunately you will still be on their friends list, it only removes them from yours, but as you won't see them every day, it's a damn sight less irritating.

Feel free to link people you find moaning to this post, if you are so inclined.

You still show up on their friends list, but they disappear from your friend-of list.

Ah, but what I really wanted was the ability to filter out a person completely, so that I'd not even see their icon in their comments on my friends lists. But I'm over that now I think.

I would not describe the sensation as hate. No. Despair, anger, confusion, perhaps. But not hate. I just wished time to myself without the constant reminders. As it was I temporarily unfriended anyone that we had in common - even my closest friends. I think that a lot of people didn't understand that, which was a shame.

i've used this last-night to get rid of all those people i don't want to advertise.. but it's far from ideal: i don't mind them commenting, i just don't want to be giving them links on my "front page". i suppose they can comment anonymously, assuming they think of that.

still i'm pretty sure this a stopgap until they sort out what they are going to do to the "friends" concept, after which it should be less ikky. :-)

You've been able to hide the "friend of" list for a long time. Take a look at my user info - you should not be able to see who has friended me.

you're misunderstanding.. i mean selectively hide - there are some i'm happy to give links to on my front page and some that i'm not. the hide friend of list option is worst than the problem afaic.

I don't mind having people on my list if I've not added them / deleted them, it's more the joke journals and attempts at communities that have failed that bothered me :)

your choice.. i can say i mind all that greatly.. i've started to mind significantly more since certain wankers started with lines like "i don't mind, so people who do mind are stupid and must be prevented from doing anything about it". people who think they know better what others want, and try to impose that "knowing" better, annoy me - i go out of my way to annoy them into stopping their antisocial behaviour.
