I just forgot to move my outlook express folders when I re-installed, and now I've lost every e-mail that I ever saved. All my pen-pal mails and everything me and meltie had ever sent to each other.

Oh fuck.

I know that feeling, ask Meltie about IMAP

Next (academic) year when the house server is something a little better than a P133 that shares the task of firewall, gateway, DHCP server, nameserver, nfs/ftp install server and SMB server for movies, and the only webserver for microvax.org i'll do it.

IMAP would be perfect - a user can create their own subfolders and things so they can organise their mail, can't they? Mof's said that so long as the mail from Hotmail gets delivered to a folder and she can organise it how she likes then it'll be OK.

And we can close another gaping security hole on the network. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside :(

Yup, the nested folder bit is what I like best about IMAP, and I'm sure you can script something like Fetchmail to grab Hotmail and filter it into folders using procmail.

I like to think I have created the perfect mail server at work....

* two RAID mirrored 250gb drives for the mail spool
* Cyrus IMAPD (the best IMAPD IMHO, the others have really crappy nested folder support)
* Exim with Mailscanner (does virus checking with ClamAV) and Spamassassin
* Mailman list manager

There are also only three publicly facing ports open, ssh, smtp and https, if a client is in our office they can connect directly with the mailserver, if they are out of the office using Windows they can port forward IMAP, SMTP and POP3 over SSH using a small windows program I wrote that is based on plink. https is open for webmail.

Something similar to that would work fine for you guys, the important part is some stable disk storage, so that should a disk fail you know you can recover... I'd stick a CD/DVD burner in there and burn backups regularly too (or rsync your mailspools to an offsite server somewhere)

You chose Exim? I've been looking round and Exim is the only program that approaches having decent documentation.

Might have to spend a bit of ££ on diskspace during the holidays then.

Wonder what IMAP support for VAX/VMS is like... ;)

If I'd had the choice I'd have chosen Sendmail but the other admin is somewhat lacking in experience (he makes up for it with enthusiasm... a little too much enthusasm)... I figured it would be easier for us both to learn about Exim than for me to teach him about Sendmail ;)

Will you guys be making an appearance at Whitby? I still owe you some IRIX cds, if I'm going to be seeing you in person you can borrow the original media till the next time I see you.

Whitby? Unless the Catholic and the Athiest make a daytrip up, I don't think so. Mof's taking a gaggle of japanese girls to her parents' house to see cows :(

was it a complete format and reinstall? or a reinstall over the previous stuff?

Did you alter partition tables at all?

If not you _may_ (unlikely and it gets worse if you keep installing things to the machine) be able to recover something using low level recovery programs.

I had a similar misadventure last year. It's a horrible feeling. I felt like I'd just cut a huge chunk out of my life. What consoled me were the memories, at least you can't accidently delete them in a hurry. *hugs you*
